The narrator and Mister Edwards have known one another for a long time for half my life. The persona has developed a great respect for Mr. Edwards since he does not call him by his nickname Prince as they called him. In this poem the persona describes the counselor Mr. Edwards handles his sickness. It is obvious that the persona greatly admires the courage of Mr. Edwards who spent months of agony, in advance he succumbed to his illness of wind by the heart. In enkindle of his haveing Mr. Edwards never condemned and he showed his faith by summing up all the problems, including his own caning, as merely being an gimmick of divinity, divinitys Work. The narrator uses strong vocabulary spasms, sweat, gut- sleuthing cry, in order to describe the depth of Mr. Edwardss pain.
At the end of the poem there is a contract in the personas status to God and Mr. Edwards position while Mr. Edwards seemed to be a more spiritual human beings who had deep faith in God, the persona seems disappointed with the armorial bearing God works. At the end of the poem he repeats Mr. Edwards words, Gods work! but his tone is sarcastic as he doesnt agree with some of the work of God.
